NBC was expecting a forced divestiture, and set up Blue as a subsidiary several years beforehand which included separating people and assets into a company called "The Blue Network, Inc." Edward J. Noble took control of that subsidiary and operated "The Blue Network, Inc. for a few years until he could negotiate the purchase of the name "American Broadcasting Company" from another firm.

Blue was the weak sister to NBC Red. Most of the high priced talent was on Red. Near the end, NBC Red was already calling itself simply "NBC" and Blue was simply "Blue" which was running mostly recycled NBC programs. Noble had to start almost from scratch building ABC.
