Chuck:

If, when modulation occurs, the center frequency
shifts as seen on an analog frequency monitor,
then the problem is due to nonlinearity.  An
example of that would be a bad varactor or 
varicap in the modulation circuitry.  A misadjusted
clilpper direct-coupled to the modulation circuit
can also cause that.

If, when modulation occurs, the center frequency
stays put, then this is due to an asymmetrical
modulating waveform, not due to nonlinearity.
