[BC] Tape deck issue

Paul, the simple answer is to get rid of the cassette decks.....but I
understand the constraints.
Since you're and AM, you are not combining the left and right outputs
(either before the board, or after) are you? That usually means phase
error or "swishy or mushy" sounds. Just feed one channel to the board
even if the board is stereo..
If that's not the case, try this:
Get a bottle of isopropol alcohol and clean the heads, tape guides, and
roller. Do the tapes exhibit the same maladies on other machines? I'm
assuming they are recorded off site and played back there? Maybe it's
the recording machine.
Also, be aware that the longer the tape (time) the thinner the tape and
more chances of wow and flutter.
If you're using a consumer-grade machine, consider replacing every year.
Best of luck.
