Especially seeing that throughout the evolution of the cellphone there was 
nothing really to compete with it.
It grew out of an infinitely more bulky and awkward two way radio system 
that was anything but portable.
Portable IBOC has to compete, right out of the gate, with a plethera of 
sleek, sexy and tiny program delivery devices
some of which perform other attractive tasks for the consumer.

Agreed and an excellent example of what you are saying!
The cellphone example, true as it is, took a couple of
decades to get thoroughly resolved.  If it takes 20 years
to get IBOC receivers up and running, then I see a problem.
