[BC] Interesting sign-offs and Tech Difficulties

I worked with a DJ years ago who told me that a station in Arkansas he
worked for in the early 1980's had to do some emergency off air time during
the evening, so the jock on the air faked a murder in the studio. A buddy
of his came in when the jock was doing a break and accused the jock of
sleeping with his wife, then fired a gun, and then the engineer took the
transmitter off for the maintenance. Listeners who heard this called the
police, who came roaring out to the studio/transmitter site to see what had
happened. Tower painters had been working on the tower and had spilled some
aviation orange paint near the door, which the cops assumed was blood when
they saw it, so they crashed into the station with guns drawn. Apparently
whoever was listening when the fake drama played out did not turn that dial,
and the station suspected that they had MORE listeners when they came back
on than they'd had when they went off.

A few years back a station I worked for had an unreliable TX .... They had
a standing contest. The first (or the 10th, I can't remember the exact
details of which call) to call in after they returned to the air won a bunch
of CDs. Lots of people kept the dial set and listened to
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS just so they could call in when we got it
back on. I guess I kind of spoiled the contest when I finally got the
gremlins out of the TX :) It did prevent dial switching by a few
loyal listeners.
