Are you sure it was a Collins ?  Your description somewhat  fits that of the 
RCA 5E which used the same tube lineup except it had a  blank tube socket 
next to the final rf  892R.  I believe this  was to hold another 892R for a 
physically close located standby 892R or  for converting to a 10kw power 
level.  Don't know if the power supply  had to be up-graded to do this or 
not.

Check Barry's  _www.oldradio.com_ (http://www.oldradio.com) ,     
transmitters,  Collins 21-A and 21-B for 5 kW.  transmitter using the  891/892 series 
tubes in a 5/10 kW. rig.
