[BC] XLR Connector wiring and phase...

Maybe somebody was used to working with the old cannon UA connectors -
where the "center" pin was ground. It was even marked "G". Have a look
towards the bottom of this page http://www.coutant.org/666r/index.html
Then there's the 3/5 pin DIN connectors.
Whatever possessed Cannon to make pin 1 the ground in the XL series?
