From the talent perspective, listening in mono is uncomfortable when
the programming is stereo. A good jock wants to hear good quality
audio (very subjective) that keeps him pumped with the music. If I
recall correctly, because of the $325,000 dirty word delay, we had
special processing for John Gambling's monitors and headsets so he
could hear something resembling the air sound. WOR is heavily
processed. He wanted that sound in the headsets.

I haven't done an AM show in quite a while. I expected mono in that
situation. I remember being uneasy when the monitor didn't sound
right. Doing an FM show with mono headsets wouldn't work for me.
However, I would often switch to mono to check spots and other
material. Always monitored off air - never program.

In recording, switchable Auratones were always used to check the
phasing and mixing for both mono and low quality radios.
