...and succeeding, in part.  IIRC Bill Paley ordered the three-part Watergate special on Cronkite's evening news cut back to two parts, with the second part severely watered down.
 
Remember too that the Washington Post, which owned television stations, was also threatened by the Nixon White House.  Something like "they are going to have a damnable time getting them renewed" showed up in the Nixon tapes.
