A fun thing to do in the first few years after TV stations stopped
running film on air, especially feature films, was to occasionally
call out "hair in the gate" or "first cue" and watch the old timers
arms flinch.

One of the identifiers of a videotape operator in the early years
was one or more fingernails with notches in the end.

A way to clear a clogged video head was to lightly place a fingernail
on the spinning headwheel. Memorex videotape was much more likely
to cause head clog than 3M. This technique only was possible on VTRs
where you could get to the spinning video heads.
