An easy way to upgrade the firmware in an HD receiver is to use a CD..

I cracked my DVD player to make it region free by playing a special DVD I
made to upgrade the firmware in that player.

Most all car radios have a CD player, just purchase an upgrade CD at
whatever store and insert it, hit play and it's done.
CD are cheep to make and the owner has the choice to upgrade or not.
