It is my understanding that MOVs should have a capacitor across them to
absorb the leading edge of the pulse long enough for the MOV's finite
turn-on time to elapse and conduction to begin.
I have been installing Joslyn Surgitrons on main power circuits with good
results for lightning, putting 1 mfd 1,000Volt capacitors across them. I use
the type made for high-current switching supplies which have tab type
terminals that conveniently just happen to mate up with the terminals on the
Surgitrons when inverted (Joslyn uses orange drop types in their standard
boxes).
Anyone with more particular info, pls jump in..........
