[BC] Poor choices

Barry,

Yes, work for public radio, these managers understand and they don't come from sales department. As far as I can tell, I am number two on the list for the station, at least, I am only a very few thousand behind the station manager and nobody else in between.

The station manager listens and rarely do I have a problems. I generally leave a voice mail on the manager's phone when I will not be at work due to some late hours, but mostly I do not have a problem because they know what I am doing and they see the results. I'll drag the manager back for changes, additions, unusual maintenance, modifiactions, & installations that I have done so they are aware of my activities; otherwise, they would have no foggy idea what I do or even what I can do. I have saved the station money and I am part of the team. BUT if you stay in the background and only do engineering, you cruzin' for a bruzin'. If you don't make sure they know what your worth to them, Dana is right, you will lose out in the end. They need to see what your doing even if they really don't understand.

Maybe one of the benefits of the mega-conglomerate broadcasters is that you most likely don't work for the local manager, but report to a regional engineering manager. Thus you are not susceptible to the whims of the local station managers.

... and here is the set of poor choices:

         1. Accept the screaming. The paycheck
continues ... for the moment. But, at the
least, the relationship is "broken." And
the managers somehow "smell" that and
         make alternate arrangements before you
         are ready for it.....

         2. Tell the manager you are done. The
paycheck stops ... and health insurance
         does, too.

         ... is there another choice?
