I fear that WTOP moving father from DC would be a non-starter. The
present site doesn't really deliver a booming sig into DC - which I'd
guess is why they are directional during the day, to get more sig
toward DC. Our ground conductivity is pretty poor. Someone with
ancient records could verify whether they were ever ND-D/DA-N from the
present site.

Being toward the top of the band, they've had daytime skywave QRM in
central DC during low sunspot years. They already have over 100 kW
ERP (compared w/ most of the NYC ND 50s) in directions from due south
through east to northeast. Their day and night patterns differ mainly
in the sig to the NW toward KSTP (and Detroit).

Years ago they tried to move W or NW toward the Potomac, but the
NIMBYs shot down every try. That would get a more respectable signal
into northern Virginia and maybe just a little better up the 270
corridor. Before they let out the null toward KSTP I could see their
towers lights from Rockville and yet not hear them.

They have compensated by buying and duplicating on outer rimshot 107.7
in Virginia, 820 in Frederick, and translator 104.3 in Leesburg, VA.

What they need is 250 kW ;-)).

Washington was a small town prior to WW2 and is radioed accordingly.
