It's interesting reading about the various YAYs and NAYs regarding comments about sirens on this site. My philosophy is Basically if it makes noise people will hear it and know that there may be impending danger.
Some very small rural fire departments around here still use outdoor warning sirens to call the members to the firehouse. Other municipalities make sure the towns folk are educated ahead of time and know what source to go to find out what is happening. And some of these siren products also contain PA facilities to allow the local agencies to announce directly to the public what the alert is about. Yes, there is an expense to bear with having siren systems . But the expense has been significantly reduced with new products. The purchaser is now given the option to choose either mechanical or solid-state systems with the latter allowing a much reduced maintenance cost overall.
