Somewhere between "the book" and what one recalls from the last drill, is a thing called a cheat sheet.
I have cheat sheets for our transmitter operators (and even myself and other tech types) that cover [whatever the subject] on a single page. Obviously, engineering cheat sheets don't need as much detail as that used by non-technical people. But if I can't boil it down to one page of "#1 do this, #2 do this, #3...", ect. for someone else to follow, then I just don't have them do it.
