Not to defend the "Luddites" but the facts surrounding this whole issue are very complicated and highly specialized. When our very industry caters to the lowest common denominator, aren't "we" just as much to blame?
Being smart got us to the Moon. That effort spawned a whole generation of other smart people who applied what we learned to things that make our everyday lives "better." But the reason to go was not because it was hard. We did it to prove our superiority. It was about keeping up with and beating the "Jones." Fifty-plus years later, we're reinventing that wheel. Not because of our desire to explore and expand our knowledge, but because it has potential to be profitable. In the meantime, what have we accomplished that even comes close? More ways to have more places to watch more of the same junk on your phone? 5G will make that even better. Don't the Luddites know that? No, because "we" have not bothered to teach the little Luddites how to connect dots.
Not just the dots that connect a faster download of Candy crush to 5G, but any dots at all. We are losing our ability (or willingness) to go to the trouble to teach dot connection theory to our youth. If they need dots connected, they ask Google to do it. Heaven forbid we expect the general population to connect the complicated series of dots that would separate fact from myth about 5G. They will only do that if the threat of losing something real is imminent. By then it's usually too late.
Maybe that space rock will do us a favor and reboot society.
