Richard,

You are not only NOT wrong but are CORRECT.

As long as the broadcast industry shouldered the unfunded burden of
local and state warning the local OES people have had it easy.

While most of the US is worried more about weather and those big vacuum
cleaners coming out of the sky lately some parts of the People's
Republic on The Left Coast has started to think about fire.

But I am not holding my breath on that one.

Last weekend while enjoying the redwoods I brought to the Zayante Fire
Protection District firehouse an article from the Marin IJ that listed
Lompico as the worst evacuation risk in the state. One road into a box
canyon. And that road has been a single lane for years since Lompico
Creek undercut it and washed out a lane during a winter storm. Santa
Cruz County has been taking their time thinking about the repair. We
laughed about even attempting to evacuate Lompico. My "plan", such as
it is, is to run down to Lake Lompico and submerge myself. Exactly what
to do with our parrots is another question.

Then Tuesday afternoon the Deer Fire started a mile or so northwest of
Lompico. Fortunately thanks to the pros at Cal Fire it's 60% contained
and forward spread stopped.

There is a real need for local warning and emergency public information,
but it must come from the local OES and not from broadcasters.
Especially broadcast engineers.
