What everyone, save for a few engineering types, fails to mention in the
context of response and recovery is the detonation impact will be felt
hundreds, if not a thousand miles from the point of detonation.  We've
covered the EMP impact adnausem here. But few in the general public
realize that impact doesn't stop where the blast or radiation zones end.

Power grids across a good portion of the USA will be damaged, or at
minimum disrupted. Which means all facets of life will be significantly
curtailed across a substantial portion of the CONUS despite no physical
damage occurring outside the explosion blast zone.
