This was a reason I once heard for a move to reintroduce lions and cheetahs here in the US, where they once roamed. Population control.

For example, I once heard that there is reluctance to send out a 
tsunami alert because some people would dash to the beach to 
watch.  My response is that this falls into the category of 
Retroactive Birth Control.  Weed out the dumb ones before they breed . . .
