I am hoping there will not be a knee-jerk reaction from the FCC to require some impractical degree of security for EAS devices as a result of this. And it comes at a time when Congress is considering a bill that would require heightened cybersecurity practices for all sorts of electronic media. Whenever you have lawmakers dictating how to do things, you end up with situations that are unworkable in the field, impractical, or just downright absurd.

What type of EAS equipment was hacked at WZZY and how did the hackers access it? Is there a recording of the message available? How quickly did the staff respond to the hacking? Have they been able to close the obvious security gap in their equipment? A little more detail would be helpful for learning the lesson for us and preventing other attacks.
