As far as 8 seconds go, that, I think is a reasonable compromise. It does take humans a few seconds to 'shift gears' as it were, or at least it takes me a few seconds.

And PLL's may lock to the tones quickly, but they can mis-lock as well. Giving them a few seconds to ensure they properly locked is not too much time IMO.

I wonder whether we actually know that's true... and if so, what people actually associate with it.  A test?
