The latest flood event around Baton Rouge again points to how media
continues to operate when the cell phones fail. So...the question is when,
not if, the FCC will mandate the FM RX's in non-Apple phones be enabled and
Apple be compelled to include them going forward. It's only a matter of time
as the cell providers have again shown they're incapable of building
infrastructure to survive natural events.
Now mind you, this is a 500 year event and lots of electronics were flooded.
Never the less, there are areas not flooded which as I understand are also
lacking service.
One of our major problems is that our society has become spoiled with
equipment that operates on-demand every-time we want it. The creates a
belief that those that talk about outages are some sort of dooms-day type
etc. Older generations, or those that have lived through a disaster have
been 'educated' differently.
Cell providers have waived their magic finger skyward and determined just
how many hours of operating time they need at a site with the power off.
(Next time you have a chance....Ask a local cell-site tech what that number
is and let us know what you find out)
The term 100 or 500 year event brings a smile - I suspect that these terms
need to be re-visited in light of the frequency of these events, perhaps
caused by climate change.
