But while we are slapping our knees, station managers are wrestling this
weekend with how they will handle the various and conflicting
interpretations of the enhanced Closed Captioning rules so intelligently
described by Ed and most likely they will give up after they learn the cost
of a live captioner, $150-$200 an hour. The stations with news staff will
continue to do what they normally do during threatening weather, with the
addition of CC's of the proper size and font and displayed in the proper
area of the picture. The loss will come from the entertainment channels that
will most likely stop carrying weather alerts, if they haven't already done
so. Without the support for the kind of national warning strategy Richard
mentions, we will become a two-class society: the Informed and the
Uninformed.
