It is even older than you think. KNBC (now KNBR) had STA from the
FCC to FSK the carrier for the USN in the late 40's and 50's.
I am told that the frequency monitor meter would go nuts when this happened.
The main issue is not technical -- we know it can work -- but
political. Who is going to maintain the equipment? The days of a
minimum two union engineers on duty at a 50 kW clear channel
transmitter site are long over.
