A redundant path through a different provider wouldn't be a bad idea but you never know where those two might cross paths. For instance, if I got a T1 through Cox to one of my transmitter sites eventually it would transition back to AT&T due to the site location. You would probably have to request circuit documentation before committing to that as a fully redundant path.
Cable TV has their own set of issues too. We have quite a few MetroE and other circuits running through Cox and on countless occasions they have proven for hours at a time due to equipment outages. I asked them one time why they don't have any kind of redundant routing like using spanning tree or some other process for routing around failed equipment and I never got a good response because it seems like they're worse than AT&T when it comes to single points of failure.

Except for systems running on completely seperate systems (think cable TV), everything runs through the CO. I would even argue the cable folks would be severely impacted from a telco standpoint. Even more so if the CO has some LD responsibilities as well.
