They kind of did that in Trek 1 The Movie.

A few years back, in my ham radio club, we had a thing that got passed around.
It started as a large HV shorting solenoid assembly from a transmitter.
We named it VGER.
It would show up on your porch.
You were required to add to it and make an entry in the log (a pocket sized spiral notebook attached) explaining the mods and their purpose.
It grew to a rather large size and had many clever mods included.
Someone even "married" it to n old 286 pc.
There also used to be a guy in town that owned a Plymouth Voyager and his license plate was VGER.
The holy grail was to somehow find that guy and get one of his expired VGER plates.
As in most holy grail projects, it never came to be.
