Mike, all good points, but the argument you'll end up with is "well, i
need to get to it remotely" thus making the router pointless. It's
like handing out the keys to your house to whomever wants one... the
lock is just to hold the door closed at that point.

I know plenty of engineers who do that (port forward EAS, satellite
gears, remote equipment, STL, etc) so they can do management from home
easier instead of a proper VPN connection or other RDP system.

It's laziness and "what could possibly go wrong".
