Dear Mr. Freinwald,

The Occupy Cal demonstrators are even now just on the other side of
Sproul Hall from where I sit in my engineering office, and I must say
that walking by them each morning and evening hasn't whipped up any
anxiety for me. Quite the opposite. Maybe I'm unduly influenced by their
huge banner covered with big letters in purple glitter, but what I see
is a large group of people that are deeply concerned while also being
respectful and calm.

I'm not worried about the yahoos (all right, maybe a little nervous
around the Alameda County sheriffs) or anyone trying to make revolution,
although I'm sure that there are agents provocateurs out there along
with the rest of the grad students, moms and dads, and professional
staff. And the occasional true-blue bone-head. On the other hand, if the
cops are music lovers, the drumming thing may have finally gotten to
them the other day. It sure would get to me.

The only recent takeover around here was at KUSF, when the powers that
be sold out a fine station for a couple of bucks.

Best regards,

Joe Tysl
