[BC] How would you build it?

When I threw out the question, I had in mind to build a single unit, in 
part with the goal of inspiring and educating the builders.

One challenge is parts. Where can you get modulation transformers and 
reactors these days? And if you go the solid-state, digital modulation 
route, will you be able to find parts to repair it in five years?

And to throw in another layer of complication, what if you weren't allowed 
to use anything made in China?
