The Vanguard I was called "the washing machine" due to its resemblance to
such an appliance. The often overlooked issue with the Vanguard II was that
the exciter power transformer was tapped for 240 VAC, not the more popular
220 VAC.

I retapped the power transformer, eliminated the audio input transformer and
replaced it with an audio input card which used audio and RF feedback and
the specs beat an MW-1 hands down. It would easily modulate to +140%! Clean
square wave performance, too. I did buy shares in the local power company,
too :-) Linear amplifiers are not very efficient.
