Not true any more than a hand choke, 3-speed-on-the-column, vacuum wipers and crank windows (not to mention needing to replace points/plugs/condenser every 5000 miles) are necessary to fully appreciate the experience of driving a car.  Those days are gone, my friend except for nostalgia pieces for old guys.
