Ampliphase was often called Amplifuzz because the uncorrected phase-modulation caused sidebands that sound like present-day IBUZ. The 135 degree vectors were soooo important and, as stated, practically impossible to maintain.
That said, assuming the drive-regulation was properly adjusted, it had the highest overall efficiency of any high-power transmitter in its day. I heard it stated, and not by a salesman, that the transmitter was paid for in the first five years of operation by the reduction of utility bills alone.
