Then as well as the computer, you need their DSP accelerator card or Apollo Interface card.

It looks like the hardware version has a retail price of $2500 - street price of $2000.

Quite a bit more than a Behringer or dbx.

A second-hand Aphex Compellor could also do the job.
The Compellors are not regarded as vintage (yet!), so they can go fairly cheaply on eBay - under $500, unlike the old UA gear.
