Gates did the transistor low level transmitter into a 4CX3000 in the 60s.
I had one on 740 and it would not hold power settings with utility variances.
The output power was all over the place, but modern feedback circuits  
could hold it well.

A lot of people don't like the Harris SX-1, but I think it is one of  
the best overdesigned AM transmitters ever built.
