OK, here's a thought: if you had to custom-build an AM broadcast transmitter capable of, say, 1 KW, how would you do it?
Given that modulation transformers aren't easy to find, my idea would be to build a small box and use it to drive a linear amplifier. It might not be the most efficient thing in the world, but it should sound pretty good.
