This may actually be sound advice. (Pardon the pun.) The purpose of headphones is not to hear yourself but all the other stuff that is going on so you know when to talk and when to shut up. If you don't know when you are talking otherwise, you do have a problem.

But I have been a fan of AKG headphones ever since 1964 when I was introduced to the Kopfhörer Zwei (K2) set. I had a pair of Audio-Technica but they kept blowing drivers until I gave up and put in a pair of Western Electric U1 telephone receivers to use for my medium-wave DX activities. I also have used a Fostex set but don't remember the model number. Koss always seemed to heavy and bulky, even though Jim Koss was the guy who invented stereo headphones.
