Headphones are indeed usually subjective however I did once get a convincing demo that was probably the least subjective ever. It was at an AES where Neumann was introducing the acoustic head. The head was originally hidden and the come on was to demo transparent headphones. They were DT48s and when I put them on, the room ambiance did not change. They then went on to reveal the head. I didn't care much about the microphone but was very impressed by the headphones and have used them ever since and have bought them for a number morning jocks.
I paid $125 in 1974 for them which is over $600 2014 dollars. Beyer stopped making them last year and the list price was around $400 then. If you look hard enough you can still find them. There is a replacement model but I have not tested them.
