Ack! I never had the pleasure of working with clippings or tape droppings.
In fact my problem was when a vendor changed their tape formulation without
notification. I recall having issues with new pancakes of Maxell brand tape
over time. Their early batches were fine, but after gaining acceptance
their quality dropped. So, I went back to Ampex mastering tape and also
Agfa which was fabulous stuff, but of course you had to re-bias every time
you changed formulations.

When I was an intern at a local station the PD asked me to splice together a
number of 5" reels of tape onto a 7" reel that they could use for
production. The reel-to-reel was an Ampex 600. The PD couldn't understand
why some spots sounded OK while others didn't. Sometimes the quality changed
mid recording.
