I worked for many years in a studio suite that used variable autotransformers (I believe that they were either Variacs or Powerstats) to dim the incandescent track lighting in the studios. MCR had, IIRC, three of them because the lighting in that room was zoned. In my younger years I worked with some very old stage lighting systems that use very large Variacs as dimmers. A variable autotransformer is by far the lowest-noise device that I have found for dimming incandescent lighting. The one caveat is that they must be wired correctly. Do not use the overvoltage taps.
