I try to crack open all of our plastic "power strips" when they are new and snip out the MOV's.  There's nothing like having an ignitor stuck across the AC lines.  That's dumb on the fast track.
Almost all of the 'woods' branded ones from wal. REQUIRED re-solder work and were a fire hazard even without the MOV's!
