The Theremin is defined as "An electronic instrument played by moving the
hands near its two antennas, often used for high tremolo effects.[After Leo
Theremin (born 1896), Russian engineer and inventor."] The American

It was incorporated into some serious orchestral works around the mid-1950s
(I saw it on TV), and was 'played' by a guy waving his arms like the
conductor.  The resulting 'music' sounded comparable to playing a
carpenter's saw with a violin bow.  That experiment died in infancy,
gratefully.  It was grating on the ears.  But I remember it was the
inspiration and distant cousin of the Moog Synthesizer which did survive
because it was controllable.
