WKYT (105.5 FM Wilmington, IL) has their tower located less than 1/4 mile
from the damage swath in Coal City/Diamond, IL. There is a photo of the
tower with the twister in the background at the
chicgaolandradioandmedia.com discussions page.
They are off the air likely due to power loss as the main power trunk line
into/through town is trashed. Their studios are located in Kankakee some
30 miles away. The tower is standing. It's unknown if their site or
systems suffered any damage.
The media in general was plenty aware of the looming severe weather as the
NWS was trumpeting the potential starting Friday and then ratcheted up the
alert levels early Sunday morning when SPC raised the risk assessment to
"HIGH" for most of the metro south.
The big twister near Peoria, now rated an EF4, was in the center of the
area of greatest instability according to the SPC model maps.
