We carried the TOR's and FFW. The 5 major TV's all went wall to wall, at
times with disturbingly inaccurate reporting and use of graphics. As the
day wore on, the TV's starting bringing in their A list anchors,
reporters, and support staff. They stayed local (except Fox and CBS for
NFL football) until 6PM local time and the start of Prime Time programming.
The fake weather people fell apart in their reporting. The true degreed
meteorologists (as opposed to those with TV/broadcasting weather
degree's from Mississippi State) were far better prepared at
interpreting the model data and radar products than the the less trained
TV only folks. As bad as Fox is otherwise, they have a Baron radar
located not far from the NWS's radar. It was installed not long after
the Plainfield F5 (1990) and it provided a lot of data for both the NWS
and public.
Only one TOR was issued for Cook County. No TV's relayed it, nor the
FFW best I could determine. Same with most of the major radio stations
(We did air the FFW and TOR's for various counties we have primary
coverage.)
There are lots of tongues wagging about this being a wake up call that
we're due for a big one. I happen to agree.
