That would mean that we'd all standardize on "standard" time.
Can't have that !
We absolutely must have DST, so that the folks who get off work
at 5PM can have some daylight in the evening.
( because switching to getting off work at 4 makes no sense )

Nooooo !
That means getting up at 3 AM on the east coast to catch the sunrise,
and working until 8 PM on the west coast.
Time zones make sense, from several perspectives.
DST does not.
It's relatively easy to keep track of 4 or 5 time zones.
Not so much to keep track of the hours that any of several vendors,
govt. agencies, grocerie stores, etc might keep, even if you do have a
vague idea where they might be.
In the Olde Dayes, High Noon was when the sun was as close to directly
overhead as it was going to get.
Except for DST, it still is.
Under DST, noon isn't noon. High, or otherwise.
