Telechrons ( later owned by GE ) were always auto start. Earlier clocks had a hole that showed red when power failed. It was was a piece of metal that was held UP by a magnet when power was on after you set the clock and it fell down when power failed and then that  was the only way to tell if power failed.  On the west coast there were some 50 cycle telechrons, and  when the power company went to 60, they paid for the repairs. I have one that *says* 50 cycles but it was repaired. It is a mantle clock.
