I did exactly the same thing for the same reason in 1964 at WHAT AM&FM, Philly.  It didn't seem to cause any problems, however.  Our wirecopy machines were dripping with oil all over the place in the mechanism. Looked like an engine with the valve covers removed!  Ancient of days.
