Hmmm,
The first thing I had to learn as a "radio engineer" was how to change the ribbon without getting any ink on my fingers! Also, I was introduced to WD-40. Squirt that into the ribbon reels and you have a new ribbon without even changing it! It would migrate ink from the portion of the reel that was never struck by a hammer to the active region. You could do this many times before the ribbon really needed to be changed because the paper was printed in "oil!"

Oh, yeah... cleaning the 'wire' machines.  Rippin' and readin'.  Worse than the paper jam was the need to install a new black ribbon.
