You will need an STA only if you are going to be
off for more than 30 days. At 10 days, you have
to send a letter to the engineer in charge of the
nearest FCC field office. The letter needs your call
letters, facility ID and only a brief description of the
problem and when you expect to return to the air. Sign
and date the letter and provide a phone number or e-mail
address where you, or someone in charge can be reached.
When you resume broadcasting, file a similar letter stating
that you are back on the air.

Also, since you are an educational institution, there is a
rule provision that allows school owned stations to be
silent during summer & other vacation periods without filing
an STA. I don't recall the details and I don't know if it
applies to college owned LPFMs or only to full service
stations, but it might be worth looking up the rule to see
if it could apply.
