Steve,
Maybe I was there in 71? I left in early winter -- just before you got there
probably - I really don't recall. HOWEVER, I do remember the groupie's
hanging around - do you remember the shotgun in the closet downstairs?
Defend the radio station! AND the "piano" audio board upstairs in the main
studio? Buterbaugh built that before he left. We had a guy that was PD by
the name of Michaels at the time - also a guy by the name of Dave Kellogg
was doing mornings - "Kellogg in the Mornings" on W-E-AM 1390. Averill's
son use to dress up as "chickenman" for public appearances - full chicken
costume - oh well enough said. A lot of air talent pass thought those
swinging doors over the years. Harry authored a memo that said no
gatherings of more than two people were allowed in the hallways for fear of
a staff rebellion or so I was told - the building intercom was built so that
Harry could listen-in to any room in the building from his office behind the
locked doors (you had to be buzzed into his office). Crazy times.

I started just after Christmas in '72. Had the 3rd w/Broadcast endorsement.
Worked the downstairs studio 'cause you could see the transmitter and
monitors. Harry would show up at all hours to see what was going on. That
was the beginning of the end for Thoms Broadcasting in the DC market. There
was a cute blond groupie who made things interesting for a young guy, tho...
